Alberta Slowly Reopens Following a Multi-Stage Process, In-Person Learning Possible at Stage 2

Alberta is doing well in handling the COVID-19 pandemic as it slowly eases restrictions during Stage 1. Outdoor public gatherings, as well as personal wellness services, have already been allowed since June 1.ย

Stage 1 was made possible because the following conditions were met last May 18:

  • 50% of eligible individuals (12 years old and above) received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine
  • Hospitalizations are below 800

With regard to vaccines, the province is shortening the time gaps between doses of AstraZeneca to 8 weeks minimum. Alberta follows the advice of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, in which individuals who have been inoculated with Oxford-AstraZeneca as their first dose can either get the second shot of Pfizer or Moderna. Or for convenience, they can get the second dose of AstraZeneca.

Two weeks after 60% of the eligible population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, as well as hospitalizations are kept at a minimum of 500 and below, stage 2 of the reopening process may then start. Most indoor settings will be available such as in-person learning for post secondary institutions in Alberta.ย

According to Premier Jason Kenney, stage 2 will most likely proceed on June 10, 2021 if everything goes well in the province.
