International Students in AU Eligible to Receive COVID Disaster Payment

International students, Australian citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with valid work visas living in a COVID-19 hotspot, such as Greater Melbourne, are entitled to receive emergency funds during the ongoing lockdown.

According to the media statement, “eligible recipients will receive up to AUD 500 per week for losing 20 hours or more of work and AUD 325 per week for losing under 20 hours. They must not have liquid assets of more than  AUD 10,000.” Funds will then be given in respect of the second and any subsequent weeks of restrictions.

AAERI President Ravi Lochan Singh acknowledged the move as highly beneficial for students currently stranded in Australia.

This financial help is a great move from the government as there was no support during lockdowns in 2020. International students were torn between going home to their respective countries or staying in Australia. Those who were stuck resorted to skipping meals just so they still have money for housing and their academic programs.

The previous travel restrictions for international students caused a global concern as a report by the Council for International Students (CISA) revealed that 93% of those stranded overseas were having significant mental issues.
