Key Takeaways:
- Filipino community groups launched the Feed-A-Student Program to help out international students affected by the lockdown.
- The organizations established a network of support to look after the mental health and well-being of the students.
The Association of Pinoy Students in Australia (APSA), Filipino Sports Arts & Recreational Club, and other Filipino community groups donated food and grocery packs for international students facing financial difficulties due to the pandemic and lockdown in Sydney. The effort was made possible through the Feed-A-Student Program organized by the APSA and associated community groups.
While food, job, and rental assistance remain major concerns for many temporary migrants, the groups also guarantee that they are establishing a network among the international students who are mostly on their own in Sydney.
Looking after the mental health and well-being of temporary migrants is also a priority for the organization, according to APSA founder Vida Aquino Fernandez.
Some were left in distress because of the struggles they face following the reimposition of the lockdown. As such, Fernandez reiterates that it’s good that these students have a network of support where they can air out their grievances.
Aside from food and grocery packs, international students are also seeking assistance for winter clothes and accommodation.
To this date, APSA continues with its distribution campaigns. The organization urges international students to like their Facebook page to ensure that they will not miss out on their updates.
