DMU Partners With World’s Biggest Tech Companies To Create More Student Opportunities

With the talent network Colorintech, a groundbreaking partnership forged by De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) will generate more game-changing opportunities for students of color.

The partnership will connect DMU students with some of the world’s largest tech businesses, such as Google, Salesforce, and Microsoft, to provide training, networking, and career development opportunities that will put them on recruiters’ radars.

Colorintech is a non-profit organization whose mission is to make Europe the world’s most inclusive tech ecosystem. The organization now collaborates with businesses all across the world to promote inclusiveness for entrepreneurs, newcomers, and working professionals.

Microsoft, Google, Deepmind, eBay, and Salesforce are some of Colorintech’s current Early Career partners.

DMU’s dedication to empowering its students, closing the Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) attainment gap, and enhancing graduate outcomes is exemplified through this partnership.

This comes at a time when 53 percent of Black tech leaders believe their organizations have failed to make meaningful diversity and inclusion reforms, indicating that there is still more work to be done in terms of attracting a more diverse spectrum of talent.

According to Mark Prescod, Associate Professor and Decolonising DMU Champion, students will have excellent opportunities to work in the tech industry because of this new partnership.

The partnership includes the following:

  • Up to 250 students are coached and supported each year into tech jobs at organizations like Microsoft, eBay, and Salesforce;
  • A limited number of slots on Colorintech’s training programs are reserved for DMU students;
  • Colorintech will make on-campus and virtual career events;
  • Colorintech invites students to join their talent network; and
  • Providing access to Google Digital Garage sessions on a first-come, first-served basis.

While students have already been invited to participate in the Microsoft Aspire program, and DMU sponsored a webinar with Google executive Pedro Pina about diversity and inclusion at the company, more webinars are in the works.

Since its inception in 2019, DMU’s Decolonising DMU initiative has worked to realize the university’s objective of being a socially progressive and completely inclusive place to learn and work.
