How To Protect Your Mental Well-Being While Studying Abroad

The mental health of students is a subject that should always be discussed. Despite the abundant resources, there are still gaps we must fill.

International students experience unique problems in their mental health. Apart from common stressors, there’s also culture shock, anxiety, and even depression.

Isolation and separation contribute to these changing moods. Often, international students experience overwhelming changes that are difficult to address.

If you’re studying abroad, you need to protect your mental well-being. A lot of times, the worst problems you’ll encounter are in your head.

Relax and Meditate

The COVID-19 pandemic was a terrifying and alarming point for many students.  There’s panic and feelings of anger and worry.

Even after the extreme impact of the pandemic, students remain troubled. And we can’t deny that relaxing during these times is difficult.

Find time to meditate every day even for a couple of minutes. This allows for reflection and rest.

Do Things That Make You Happy

What are the things that bring you joy? What activities make your heart throb with bliss?

In these difficult times, it’s challenging to do joyful things without feeling guilty. But for the sake of your mental well-being, invest time and resources for enjoyable deeds.

If you love music, consider attending virtual concerts. If you love to travel, take some days off to visit some tourist sites.

Start a New Exercise Routine

A healthy mind starts with a healthy body. Fortunately, there are plenty of simple exercises you can start at home.

You can find exercise videos online or join a virtual yoga class. Find whatever exercise is suitable for your body, time, and of course, budget.

Find Something That Unleashes Your Creativity

A great way to keep the brain active is through creative expression. Creativity is a fantastic type of mental stimulation that’s beneficial for your well-being.

You don’t need to have great talents to do this. You can try out free verse poetry or engage in activities like painting and pottery.

Contact Your Family and Friends Daily

Support from friends and family is crucial for your mental well-being. It’s necessary to share your sentiments with them and vice versa.

Simple and short messages could go a long way. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to tell them that you love and appreciate them. We all need to hear these words during these times.

Remember Why You’re in That Journey

When under extreme stress, students tend to forget the reason why they study abroad. This leads them to lose motivation and inspiration to move forward.

Why are you studying abroad? Maybe you’re there for better education or the promise of a bright life after graduation.

The idea of giving up is also a thin line away for stressed students. Remember why you’re on that journey to keep you inspired.
