According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, students who are already enrolled in universities abroad can receive their COVID-19 vaccines in Mumbai. They can access vaccines at the hospitals in Kasturba, Rajawadi and Cooper.
Recently, the Maharashtra government has suspended COVID-19 vaccinations for individuals in the 18–44 age group due to vaccine shortage. The Serum Institute of India (SII), the largest vaccine manufacturer in the country, was tasked to cover 250 million by July. But India has a recent coronavirus surge, and only 26 million people have been fully vaccinated out of a 1.4 billion population. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cancelled all vaccine exports to focus on the country’s needs. As a result, the vaccine supply for India has almost dried up.
Students seeking to pursue their studies overseas are worried because they need to receive full doses before starting their academic programs. There is no concrete update as to when vaccines will be available again. That’s why the government has decided that students needing the COVID-19 vaccine can go to Kasturba, Rajawadi and Cooper hospitals to have their shot. Students with an admission confirmation letter ( I-20, DS-160) can avail of the vaccine requirement to proceed with their studies in foreign universities.
