Int’l Student Population in Kazakh Universities Up to 30,000

According to the Kazakh Ministry of Education and Science, the number of international students studying in Kazakh universities has increased to 30,000 coming from the United States, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East, among other places.

Approximately 64 percent of all students were from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the ministry has specified.

Local institutions participate in international education fairs to assist foreigners to learn more about education in Kazakhstan, according to Adlet Toibayev, Director of the Ministry of Education and Science’s Higher and Postgraduate Education Department.

In November, celebrations commemorating Kazakhstan’s education were organized in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Tashkent.

Universities use special education grants to entice international students in pursuing their higher education in Kazakhstan.

Medicine, pedagogical sciences, business, management and law, social sciences, and other majors are popular among international students.

The government also offers scholarship programs for international students and Kazakhs who are not citizens of the country to promote the Kazakh national education system around the world.

In the first year of the program’s implementation, 89 foreign nationals with strong academic records were granted the opportunity to study for free at local universities.

In 2021, the government granted 240 grants at all levels of higher and postgraduate education, a 2.5-fold increase.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s universities have been progressively improving their international standing, with 14 Kazakh universities included in the QS World University Rankings 2022, and three universities included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.

Moreover, the country’s English-language educational programs have grown, resulting in a rise in the number of qualified foreign professionals.
