The California Apprenticeship Initiative (CAI) has awarded College of the Canyons a US$250,000 grant to provide pre-apprenticeships that will prepare students with workforce-ready skills and fulfill the requirements of the construction sector in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Between August 2022 and June 2024, the institution will offer a pre-apprenticeship to apprenticeship pathway to 50 individuals in collaboration with the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters (SWRCC) and the William S. Hart Union High School District.

According to Harriet Happel, dean of career and technical education at the college, the pre-apprenticeship pathway leads to an apprenticeship opportunity, and students can earn stackable, industry-recognized credentials.
The grant will go toward a construction technologies pre-apprenticeship program at the college’s Canyon Country campus, as well as a construction technologies dual-enrollment program at the William S. Hart Union High School District.
College of the Canyons students will have a competitive advantage when it comes to achieving social and economic mobility in the workforce with this grant.
Moreover, students will be prepared for one or more of the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters Union Registered Apprenticeship programs under the Southwest Carpenters Training Fund after completing the program.
The project will collaborate closely with veterans’ organizations, America’s Job Centers, and other community stakeholders in order to recruit from communities that have been disproportionately impacted.
The project is designed to assist both students and industry, as well as aid the state’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
