Three hundred seventy-one (371) international students and 569 temporary workers have been invited to apply for the Ontario Provincial Nomination Programme (PNP) this June. The 371 international students, meeting the EOI score of at least 66, can then apply through the International Student Stream.
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Programme (OINP) allows the applicants to receive a provincial nomination from Ontario, after which they can then proceed in applying for permanent residence. Students who have applied through the International Student Stream do not need to be in Canada to apply. As long as the following requirements are met:
- Completed a program at a Canadian Designated Learning Institution
- Eligible job offer in Ontario
- Intention to immigrate to Ontario
Expression of Interest (EOI) profiles are ranked based on different factors such as skill level and Canadian work experience. Ontario uses the National Occupational Classification (NOC) to assign such points.
For the OINP scoring, factors such as skill level and work experience, wage, education, official language ability, and region are also considered. Ten points are allocated in response to labour market needs.
This new system hopes to be fair for all international students who struggled in the past. PNPs constitute a significant stepping stone to becoming a permanent resident in Canada. The government wishes to welcome more than 1.2 million new Canadian permanent residents in the next two years.
“We look forward to welcoming international students back to our campuses across Canada once it is safe to do so. Our government is dedicating resources to ensuring study permit processing for as many students as possible in time for the fall semester,” said Mary Ng, Minister for International Trade.
Canada remains a preferred study destination among international students, and calls for an invitation to apply (ITA) are always welcome news among interested learners.
