Scholarships for Medical Students Around the World

Doctors, medical practitioners, and medical researchers are some of the most important professions in the world, as they are related to making people healthy, or saving people’s lives. Thus, it is no wonder that to become a doctor, a medical researcher, or other types of medical practitioners, long years of studying, and a lot of money to fund one’s study is important. 

For many students, getting a scholarship to pursue a degree in courses related to medicine in their home country or abroad is a huge help.

Read below to know the different types of scholarships for medical students and in which countries they are applicable to use. 

Four-Year Ph.D. Studentships in Science 

This grant funding is applicable to students planning to undertake postgraduate training or a four-year Ph.D. Studentship in Science in the UK. 

The assistance includes four years of studentship stipend (the cost vary if you are outside or inside London), Ph.D. registration fees, college fees (if required), laboratory rotation expenses, skills training, travel fee, transition cost to help students move to the next level of their career, and childcare and caring responsibility cost (if applicable). 

Some of the UK institutions included in this scholarship program include health programs in King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, University of Edinburgh, University of Nottingham, and so on. 

AMC Amsterdam Merit Scholarship 

The AMC Amsterdam Merit Scholarships allow students who want to study in the Netherlands, at the University of Amsterdam to pursue a master’s level at its Faculty of Medicine. The scholarship is specifically given to outstanding non-EU/EEA students who have already been admitted into the program. 

The scholarship assistance includes EUR 4,000, or an amount proportional to the date the student started their program.

Edith SeVille Coale Scholarship

This scholarship program is offered to female medical students who are already accepted in a medical school and already entering their second or third year. Aside from being female, students should also be outstanding when it comes to their academic performance and can demonstrate their need for financial assistance. 

Students enrolled in the following medical schools in the US can apply for the award:

  • Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine 
  • Howard University College of Medicine
  • Georgetown University School of Medicine
  • The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences

Successful applicants may get $5,000 to $8,000. 

John Snow Scholarship 

This scholarship is offered to medical students currently enrolled in an Australian or Aotearoa (New Zealand) medical school. The scholarship aims to provide students with the opportunity to pursue a career path in public health medicine. Successful applicants of this scholarship can either get a $250 or $1,500 award, plus a certificate, in recognition of their achievement. 

Carl Duisberg Scholarship 

The Carl Duisberg Scholarship is one of the scholarships being given by DAAD, a German-based organization, and is one of the world’s largest funding organizations for international students and researchers. 

This particular scholarship is offered to students and young professionals with up to two years of experience in the field of medicine, especially on the following: 

  • Medical science and health technology
  • Public health
  • Health economics
  • Human and veterinary medicine 

The value of each scholarship varies per the needed financial support of an individual but is limited to EUR 20,000 per request.
