International students must obtain a residency visa before they can study in Germany due to the strong demand for both free and public education. Who can study in Germany for free?

In Germany, everyone can study for free! This is true for practically all public university study programs. However, if you are not from the EU, you will need to obtain a residence permit before entering the country, and you will be required to complete your studies in Germany.

1. Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, usually known as LMU, is Germany’s highest-ranked university. Its curricula are regarded as among the greatest in the world, with Arts & Humanities and Physical Science courses ranking 18th and 21st globally, respectively.

Since 2013, LMU has been a tuition-free university in Germany, charging just a little price for several professional and graduate degrees and certifications.

2. Technical University of Munich

The Technical University of Munich, or TUM, is Germany’s second-best university. It was founded in 1868 and includes campuses in Munich, Heilbronn, Freising, Garching, and Singapore.

TUM focuses on Architecture, Aerospace, Engineering, Chemistry, Informatics, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Sports & Health Science, Education, Governance, Management, and Life Science as a technical university.

3. Humboldt University of Berlin

The Humboldt University of Berlin (HU Berlin) is a non-profit, public research university in Berlin, Germany.

The institution is divided into nine faculties and follows the Humboldtian educational paradigm. Law, Mathematics & Natural Science, Life Science, Philosophy (I & II), Humanities & Social Science, Theology, and Economics & Business are the subjects in question.

HU Berlin, like other German free institutions, only charges a semester fee of 300 Euros. This includes a seasonal transportation pass as well as certain student organization expenses.

4. University of Bonn

This free German public university, officially known as the Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn, is ranked tenth in Germany.

The institution has around 37,000 students, with 13% of them coming from outside Germany. They are enrolled in the university’s seven faculties, which include Catholic and Protestant Theology, Law and Economics, Medicine, The Arts, Mathematics and Natural Science, and Agriculture.

5. Free University of Berlin

Germany’s tenth-best university is the Free University of Berlin or FU Berlin.

FU Berlin offers a wide array of study programs which includes Biology & Chemistry, Earth Sciences,  Business & Economics, History & Cultural Studies, Law, Philosophy & Humanities, Mathematics & Computer Science, Physics, Political & Social Science, Education & Psychology, Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine.
