Turkey Eyes To Attract More African Students to Its Universities in 2023

The Turkish government will use the recently held Turkey-Africa summit on Oct. 21-22, 2021, as a springboard to attract more African students to its universities.

In 2023, the Turkish government will begin accepting high school certificates to admit African students to the majority of degree programs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Turkey’s government aims to use the recent Turkey-Africa summit as a springboard to attract more African students to its universities.
  • In 2023, the Turkish government will begin accepting high school diplomas for admission to most degree programs for African students.
  • The International Student Admission Examination for Turkey will be held as an essential step toward the country’s internationalization goals.

According to Erol Ozvar, president of the Turkish Council of Higher Education, African students will not be required to take the Turkish International Student Admission Examination unless they apply for engineering, medicine, or law courses.

As a significant step in achieving its internationalization objectives, Turkey’s International Student Admission Examination will be held.

Starting in 2023, a Selection and Placement Centre (OSYM) will administer TR-YOS (foreign students’ admission examinations).

The YOS exam results will be used for student admission to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, teaching, and engineering programs, and those who have the TR-YOS base score will be able to apply to these programs.

For other programs, students with criteria such as TR-YOS, national exams of countries, and high school graduation grades will be accepted.

The council had signed memorandums of understanding for higher education cooperation with 21 African countries, all at the ministerial level, paving the way for student and faculty exchanges and joint research between universities.

Around 40,000 African students from 54 nations were enrolled in the country, with a third of them female and 20 percent pursuing postgraduate education.

Syria has the most significant international student numbers in Turkey, with 47,482 students.
