UK Accepts China and India’s COVID-19 Vaccines for Travel Purposes

The COVID-19 vaccines from China and India have been authorized in the United Kingdom for travel and entry into the country, according to a notice issued by the Department for Transport and the Department of Health and Social Care.

The UK is currently allowing travel and entry to passengers who have been vaccinated with Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna, and Janssen, in accordance with the UK government’s updated guidance on approved COVID-19 vaccines and countries and territories with approved proof of vaccination.

Key Takeaways:

  • COVID-19 vaccines on the World Health Organization’s Emergency Use List will be recognized for travel and entry to the United Kingdom.
  • China’s Sinovac, Sinopharm, and India’s Covaxin have been added to the country’s approved list of vaccines for inbound travelers.
  • Tourists and international students who have been fully vaccinated will be allowed to enter the UK.

With the new notice, tourists and international students who have been fully vaccinated will be allowed to enter the country.

China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd., state-owned Sinopharm, and India’s Bharat Biotech International Ltd. have all added their vaccines to the list that the UK has approved for entry with proof of full vaccination.

The UK will now accept all seven COVID-19 vaccines that have obtained emergency approval from the World Health Organization (WHO), including India’s Covaxin.

All people under the age of 18 will be treated as completely vaccinated at the border and will be permitted to enter the UK without self-isolating on arrival, simplifying the travel rules even more.

The UK is following Australia’s announcement last month that it would accept all WHO-approved vaccines when it opened its borders to foreign travelers.

Earlier this month, the United States announced that it would accept all WHO-approved vaccines when it opened its borders to foreign passengers.

Canada will also increase the list of COVID-19 vaccines that travelers can obtain to be considered fully vaccinated starting Nov. 30.

With this notice from the UK, tens of thousands of Chinese students given homegrown shots will be allowed to travel to the country.

According to data from the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency, China accounts for the majority of international students in the United Kingdom, and their families pay significant income to universities there each year.

Those who have not been properly vaccinated must undergo COVID-19 testing and be quarantined for 10 days.
