University Life in the UAE: What Int’l Students Can Look Forward To

Any student interested in studying abroad and experiencing a different culture will be drawn to the uniqueness of the United Arab Emirates.

This academically thriving country will deliver an unforgettable study abroad experience, with a high literacy rate of 93% and women accounting for 70% of university graduates.

Read on to learn more facts about student life in this amazing country.

Lifestyle

Life in the UAE will most likely be very different from what you’re used to. Weekends, for example, run from Friday through Saturday, so Thursday nights may be busier.

Alcohol drinking is under some laws, which should be researched beforehand. Everyone, including foreigners, is subject to strict food, drink, and smoking bans from sunrise to sunset throughout Ramadan.

The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim country, and newcomers should be informed of the laws and customs that must be followed. When in public, displays of affection should be kept to a minimum, and you should dress conservatively.

The UAE has strong privacy laws, with high fines and even prison sentences for photographing persons without their permission. However, it is important not to be persuaded by any preconceived notions about the country before moving. It will be easier to settle in if you are respectful of the country’s values.

Culture

You will be expected to follow certain conventions and traditions, which you should be aware of before studying in the UAE. For example, wearing revealing clothes is only appropriate on beaches, and dressing modestly is important when visiting museums and mosques.

Accommodation

The cost of living will vary based on the emirate you choose. In the United Arab Emirates, there are two main forms of accommodation: university housing and private housing.

Both types of housing often need a security deposit, with monthly expenses ranging from AED 1,500 to AED 3,000 for university housing and AED 5,000 for privately rented housing.

Weather

If you enjoy warm weather and lovely beaches, the UAE is the place for you. However, if you visit in June, July, or August, you may need to spend the majority of your time indoors due to temperatures that can reach up to 48 degrees Celsius (however, every building has air conditions).

Safety

Tourist scams and pickpocketing are uncommon in cities, and overall levels of violence and crime are low.

Leisure

While dining out at some of the more extravagant restaurants may need a higher budget, there are still plenty of affordable things to do during your weekend activities.

A trip to the movies, a drive to the shopping centers, or a day at the beach, especially in milder climates, are just a few options to catch up with friends while keeping the dirhams in check.

The UAE also has plenty of beautiful beaches where you can relax without worrying about your bank account.

Whether you want to stay in the UAE or return to your home country, studying in the UAE will improve your CV and expand your chances of employment. Because of the enormous number of expatriates, there are numerous networking opportunities.
