International students of the University of California can attend in-person learning this Fall 2021, provided that they are fully vaccinated with the approved vaccines from the World Health Organization (WHO). This move is to keep the on-campus community safe amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
WHO-approved vaccines are included in the requirements for international students who are returning for the Fall semester face-to-face classes. As of May 16, 2021, the WHO-approved vaccines for emergency use are Astrazeneca-SK Bio, Janssen, Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech, Serum Institute of India, and Sinopharm. Students who do not comply with the policy will not be allowed to attend the university’s in-person learning programs and facilities. While there are still remote learning classes for the upcoming semester, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Alysson Satterlund said, “the intention is to highlight and continue to return to in person learning as many ways as we possibly can.”
For international students who have received vaccines not FDA or WHO approved, they need to be revaccinated. In California, over 160,000 international students consist primarily of Chinese and Indians. During the pandemic, an estimate of 20% to 25% of the enrolled students are overseas. Another suggestion made by AS International Senator Dakssh Saraf was to provide accommodations for the returning foreign students.
Aside from that, Associate Students will give $250,000 to the International Students and Program Office (ISPO) to transport the international students from their country of origin to UCSD. In addition, the fund will cover mental health services.
The University of California follows strict health protocols in welcoming back all international students this coming Fall 2021.
